Cops hunt for relative after woman killed

Police are searching for a 51-year-old man who allegedly killed his relative at her Amalinda home on New Year’s Day.

Nomava Jevu, 55, was stabbed after getting into an argument with the man on Friday.

Jevu, the family’s breadwinner and a mother of two, worked at Buffalo City Metro as a senior administration officer for organisational support in the department of corporate support services.

Police spokesman Colonel Mtati Tana said the police were notified just after 3pm the day she was killed.

“The deceased was at her house with her mother when the suspect arrived and headed for her room to stab her,” he said.

“The two struggled together when the suspect allegedly drew a knife and stabbed twice.

“It is believed in an attempt to escape the deceased ran, but later collapsed near her neighbour’s premises.”

Tana said Jevu sustained stab wounds to her chest and back.

“A case of murder has been opened but no arrests have been made.”

Jevu’s boss, BCM corporate support services general manager Sweetness Mxunyelwa, said the department was still trying to digest the untimely death of their colleague.

“The passing on of our colleague has left us speechless from shock.”

Jevu’s mother, Victoria, said the argument was over “a piece of land”.

“This started in November when a relative which I had given my plot to use in Scenery Park moved in with us in my late daughter’s house.

“The young relative occasionally swore at me, calling all me sorts of names, and became disrespectful towards me because he did not have a room in my daughter’s house.

“But I continuously told him that he had a plot in Scenery Park which he could live in comfortably.”

Jevu said the relative had demanded the title deed for the plot because he wanted to sell it.

“That was the constant argument in this household because my daughter was against that and we often told the relative he would not have a home if he sold the plot,” she said, adding the disagreement had eventually led to the death of her daughter.

Jevu’s funeral will be held on January 16.
