A suspected hijacker who escaped from a King William’s Town prison on Sunday afternoon is still at large.

Siyabonga Pollen Mlambo, 22, is one of five men from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) arrested last July in connection with a spate of hijackings in the KWT area.

He was arrested in Umzinto on the KZN South Coast, together with four other alleged accomplices, while driving a VW Polo sedan allegedly hijacked at gunpoint in King William’s Town in June last year.

Correctional services regional manager Nkosinathi Breakfast yesterday confirmed that Mlambo was still at large. Police and officials from his department “were following leads”.

“We know that there is a possibility that he has already left the province, and that is why we are looking for him all over the country.”

Mlambo and his co-accused were expected to appear again at the King William’s Town Magistrate’s Court on January 20.

They face various charges of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Police had previously confirmed to the Daily Dispatch that all five suspects had been positively identified in a police line-up last year by their victims. — asandan@dispatch.co.za
