Passenger dies after cars collide in Quigney

A woman died when the car she was in collided with a vehicle in Moore Street, Quigney on Sunday.

The unidentified woman was in the front-passenger seat and with two relatives in a white Toyota Tazz. They were pulling out of their driveway when a blue Toyota Tazz allegedly came speeding down Moore Street towards the beachfront.

Eyewitness Hendrick Koorsen, 37, said the accident took place at approximately 6.30pm.

“I was coming from the Windmill when I heard a guy put his foot on the brakes. It made quite a sound, and this was followed by a loud bang. I then realised it was a collision.”

Koorsen said the blue Tazz had “T-boned” the white Tazz and dragged it for several metres.

He said paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes, and while they attended to those injured a large crowd gathered and looted the two vehicles.

The female passenger in the white Tazz was declared dead on the scene.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said a case of reckless and negligent driving and one of culpable homicide had been opened.

“No one has been arrested as yet. The identity of the deceased is not yet known; we do not have her information,” Mqala said.

Koorsen said police and traffic officers took about an hour-and-a-half to arrive on the scene, and when they finally did, they “just stood there doing nothing”.

The other two occupants of the white Tazz and the driver of the blue Tazz were taken to Frere Hospital for treatment. Koorsen said they did not appear to be seriously injured.

The Dispatch was unable to ascertain their condition at the time of writing yesterday.

The Eastern Cape department of transport yesterday expressed concern at the high number of road accidents in the province.

Spokesman  Ncedo Kumbaca said  the accidents were caused mostly by human error , which included speeding and overtaking when not safe to do so.

Stray animals were also a cause for concern. “Livestock owners leave their animals to roam and stray in public roads and cause accidents.

“There would not be so many crashes if we all care about and respect human life.”

On Thursday at about 5pm a 22-year-old man was killed and two others seriously injured when a truck and a van collided on the N2 between Butterworth and East London.

On Friday at about 11.30pm three people died when the vehicle they were in collided with a stray horse near Lugelweni village on the N2 between Mount Frere and Mount  Ayliff. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
