Terror at sea for Cape crew‚ 2 killed

Two crew members sailing from Langebaan to Cape Town died when their yacht capsized early on Monday morning‚ the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says. One person survived.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said duty crews were called at 4.30am following reports of a yacht capsized between between Melkbosstrand and Yzerfontein on the West Coast.

“On arrival on the scene‚ the local yacht Tara was found broken up in amongst rocks on the shore line.”

A survivor‚ a 66-year-old male Irish citizen who lives in the Western Cape‚ had managed to get to shore and he had raised the alarm‚ Lambinon said. He was not injured.

“The bodies of a 61-year-old male‚ a Scottish citizen‚ and a 49-year-old female‚ an Irish citizen‚ both residents in the Western Cape‚ were located and recovered.”

Lambinon said it is not yet known what caused the yacht to run aground.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority will investigate the circumstances of the capsizing.

An inquest docket has been opened by police.
