Renowned trumpeter Feya Faku and pianist Nduduzo Makhathini will be performing at a special Valentine’s Day show at the Velvet Jazz Lounge in East London next Friday.

Organiser Alfredo Naidoo said a jazz show was the ideal way to celebrate love.

“This show is about celebrating love, and jazz is a romantic genre, so we put this show together because we wanted to get all our music lovers into that spirit,” said Naidoo.

He said Faku and Makhathini were two of his favourite jazz musicians and since both were doing well in their careers, they were an obvious choice.

He said they had planned an entire weekend of activities to suit all musical preferences.

“So Friday is the Faku and Makhathini performances, then on Saturday evening we will be hosting a romantic pre-Valentine’s Day R & B music evening and then on Sunday we will be hosting local jazz band, Urban Connection, for the afternoon jam session,” he said.

Port Elizabeth-born musician Faku established himself nationally and internationally and has worked with musicians such as Dave Young, Gustavo Begalli, Larry Ridley, Colin Vallon, Frederic Ljungkvist and Paul Hanmer.

His musical career has taken him to Europe, Japan, South America and Cuba.

Speaking to the Saturday Dispatch, Faku recalled how he first fell in love with music.

Makhathini said he grew up surrounded by music played by his family – his mother was a pianist and his father a guitarist – and was exposed to a range of music including traditional Zulu music.

“I recall turning the knob on the radio until it reached the end, where I would listen to Indian music. I was also part of the choir at school and would sing at church.

It was only after high school that he started to study jazz piano.

The Friday night show starts at 7pm and tickets are R150, and the first 10 couples will get supper and a CD added to the deal.

The Saturday night show also starts at 7pm, with tickets costing R50. Tickets for the Sunday afternoon show cost R50. To book call 074-704-3176 or 043-722-1076. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
