Villagers not getting post

Mqanduli villagers are livid after discovering that their letters have been piling up at the town’s post office for months.

While some claim they had not received their monthly statements of accounts, one villager told how his 25-year-old unemployed son had missed an important job interview after a letter sent to him for the interview only reached him two months later.

Mzingisi Mrwetyana from Ngcwala village said he owned a postbox, from which he collected his correspondence, inside the post office.

The box was shared by fellow villagers and the local school.

“I did some research last year and discovered that the post is just piling up at the post office as there is no one to sort it out,” he said.

“I learnt that their contracts had not been renewed sometime last year.”

Attempts to get comment from post office management were unsuccessful at the time of writing yesterday.

However, a staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was no one to sort out post once it arrived.

“If you can come here, you’ll find piles and piles of letters behind the counters. The contracts of the sorters were not renewed in June last year,” he said.

He said there were hundreds of crates filled with letters that had not been sorted or delivered to recipients since July last year.

Mrwetyana said his son, Siliziwe Mrwetyana, missed out on a job interview with the South African National Defence Force last year after he only got a letter informing him of the date for the interview two months later.

“He is still hurting from missing out on that interview, even now.”

Siliziwe, who has an N6 electrical engineering qualification, said he had resorted to driving taxis instead of sitting idle at home.

He has not been called to another interview since, despite sending many job applications to different companies and departments.

Another Ngcwala villager, Sivuyile Mchunu, said he often received threatening SMSes over unpaid accounts.

“I am always accused of shunning the letters they send me,” he said.

Some villagers are allegedly not able to update banking details as they have not received any correspondence from their banks.
