Classes trashed, books burned

A Mdantsane school was vandalised at the weekend and nine children, aged between six and 12, allegedly high on the drug tik (methamphetamine), have been accused of the act.

“These children have really disappointed us. They are known to the community and are not pupils at this school. We took them out of their schools today (yesterday) and they were questioned about their criminal actions.

“We are very shocked as we have never seen anything like this. This is a good school that they have ruined. We don’t have a caretaker,” Katiya said.

“We thought these were children but clearly they are not, otherwise they would not have committed this crime. Now a day of learning has been wasted.

“We called their parents to clean up this mess with them and they will have to buy glass to replace the broken panes,” Katiya added.

The school prides itself in its 10 classrooms with furniture and learning resources for pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 4.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said police were investigating a case of burglary of a “business” and no arrests had been made.

Mbi said parents were negotiating for their children to not be arrested. “We will wait for the negotiation process and police will enquire from the principal if she still wants to continue with the case, but our investigation continues.” — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
