Young Mthatha woman born to be a true leader

Aspiring entrepreneur Ludwekazi Ndlazi from Mthatha is among six young people battling to be crowned the number one leader on SABC1.

The youth show One Day Leader sees six young people showcasing their leadership skills by tackling modern-day social, economic and political issues to compete for the title.

The 23-year-old said she had been following the show since it started about four years ago and was encouraged by her sister to enter this year.

Ndlazi, who is studying for a degree in financial management in Durban, said she was involved in a number of community empowerment projects.

The former Khanyisa High School pupil said said her goal was to become an agent of change in the country.

“If I become this year’s leader I plan on engaging with other young people from other countries to come up with solutions for some of our problems.

“My motto is ‘dream it, visualise it, make it happen’ and I believe that I am on the right path,” she said.

The selection process of the show saw hundreds of young people from across the country submitting their profiles online.

“I was informed that I had made it to the top 90, then that was brought down to 45 before they selected the top six,” she said.

Each week the contestants are given a specific theme to consider and investigate in order to formulate a personal opinion and a vision that will inspire the youth.

They are also required to work on a community project.

“One of our tasks was to address the issue of service delivery.

“Every week one of the six heads the task but we still work as a team. It is only when we debate that one is on their own,” she said.

This past week’s debate was on the country’s readiness for a female president. Ndlazi was adamant that a woman would have a positive change on the state of our nation.

Her speech saw her gain major points from the judges.

Ndlazi said she hoped to inspire the youth to take charge and come up with solutions for some of the problems our country was facing. “Our future is in our hands and I want to come up with solutions along with my peers.”

While the judges give out points, the public also gets the chance to vote for their favourite leader on the show.
