Two women in head-to-head battle for Beacon Bay’s Ward 4

The contest for the highly sought-after Ward 4 at the heart of Beacon Bay is likely to be a two-women race this year.

The ANC’s only candidate, Bhelekazi Mabandla, received overwhelming support at a public meeting last week, and the DA has confirmed incumbent Marion Mackley will contest for a second term.

In 2011, the DA saw its support in Ward 4 rise from 54% to 82%, while the ANC’s plunged from 38% to 17.6%.

It was after the result of the 2011 elections that the ANC decided to allow communities to participate in the nomination of ward councillors. This followed a series of tumultuous protests from communities complaining about councillors being imposed on them.

Mabuyane has said the ANC wants full participation by communities in the selection process.

“The ANC will make sure it puts forward candidates who are more in tune with what the community wants and who have been chosen by the community,” Mabuyane said.

The EFF also plans to contest the ward.

Provincial secretary Thembenkosi Apleni said the party had finished building its structures and was set to contest all 50 BCM wards.

“In March the party will have finalised all internal processes and will be in a position to put forward a candidate that will contest in Beacon Bay,” he said.

COPE has not indicated whether it will contest the ward. — simthandilef@dispatch.co.za
