A maternity ward matron at Steve Biko Academic Hospital has been suspended – apparently over the use of the “k-word”.
According to a terse statement from the Gauteng Department of Health, the matron “has been suspended with immediate effect while investigations into the matter continue”.
“The hospital has appointed an investigation team after racism allegations were levelled against the matron by her colleagues in the unit‚” the statement said.
Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said: “We will not tolerate any form of racism in our facilities. The team has been appointed to test the veracity of these allegations.”
The statement did not mention the race of the matron‚ but EWN reported that she called “black nurses the ‘k-word’ ”.
