Armed gang target Spar

Shots were fired inside the Berlin Spar early yesterday morning when the store manager and security guards stopped four armed men from robbing the business.

The incident occurred at 2am. Police said the men were armed with military weapons and fired at the manager and his private security personnel before fleeing the scene.

They did not take anything.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said officers and members of a private armed response team responded to the scene when an alarm was triggered.

“The incident began when four armed men accosted a security guard stationed outside the store. The men overpowered the guard and tied him up with ropes before entering the store.

“The alarm was activated, causing a private security company commissioned by the store to respond,” Mbi said.

He said the manager of the store had also rushed to the scene.

“When the manager arrived the armed robbers spotted him and started opening fire. He ducked and sustained a cut on his neck in the process.”

The men then rushed out of the store where they got into the getaway vehicle and fled the scene.

“A case of robbing a business has been opened for investigation. The suspects are still at large,” Mbi said.

He said on Thursday night four men had also used the same modus operandi to force their way into a computer accessory business in Vincent where they stole 10 laptop computers valued at R50000.

No shots were fired during the incident, which took place just after 8pm, Mbi said. The men later fled the scene.

Police were investigating and no arrests have been made yet.

Mbi said anyone with information on either incident should contact the SAPS Crime Stop hotline on 08600-10111 and all information would be treated as confidential.
