The East London Industrial Development Zone handed over bursaries worth more than R450000 to nine disadvantaged Eastern Cape students on Friday.

The nine, who achieved excellent matric results last year, were selected from various parts of the province and were each awarded bursaries worth R50000.

IDZ corporate communications manager Ayanda Ramncwana said the bursary programme targeted pupils from surrounding rural and urban areas.

Ramncwana said the ELIDZ, through its corporate social investment programme, had a number of education support initiatives.

ELIDZ corporate affairs executive, Amanda Magwentshu, said they had a dual approach.

“While we aim to reach out to the whole of the Eastern Cape, we also give special attention to our immediate neighbours, the community of Ward 46 in Buffalo City.”

Ward 46 covers areas such as Orange Groove, Greenfields, Sunnyridge, Westbank and Leaches Bay.

Among the nine beneficiaries was Njabulo Khumalo, who recently featured on the front page of the Daily Dispatch when he passed his matric at 16, with five distinctions.

Khumalo is currently doing his first year at the University of Pretoria.

“Through the financial assistance I will be the first in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree and had I not received it, I would not have funds to pay the tertiary institution’s fee.

“I will grab this opportunity with both hands and when I represent something, I give of my best,” he said.

Khumalo and Sonwabiso Mantyi were also the recipients of an additional R84000 from the Unathi Trust.

Speaking at the hand-over, Unathi Trust representative, Joe Jongolo, said the company decided to support the two because of their excellent matric results.

“We are definitely looking at growing this partnership with the ELIDZ because it is something that is close to the hearts of our trust,” said Jongolo.

Qaphela Magaqa, from Dutywa, who is doing a Bachelor of Sciences in Geographical Studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, was overjoyed when he heard he was one of the ELIDZ’s bursary recipients.

“ has alleviated a lot of strain for my family and this bursary has inspired me to keep pushing for more,” he said.
