Playright, director Lubisi to be buried in Cambridge

South African playwright and theatre director Michael Lubisi, who fell to his death at the weekend, will be buried tomorrow.

The ceremony will be held at the Indoor Sports Centre in Mdantsane NU3 at 9am.

Lubisi died on Saturday when he plunged 30m to his death while trying to force his way out of a flat in Amalinda in East London.

He was 63.

The incident occurred at the Emerald Sky Complex in the suburb at approximately 10pm.

Lubisi was born in King William’s Town in 1952 before moving to Mdantsane and later to Gauteng where he pursued a career in the creative arts industry.

He is survived by his wife Lumka and their two sons Thabo and Xolisa.

Thabo, the youngest of his two sons, said yesterday Lubisi will be buried at the Cambridge Cemetery.

“All his friends must come and bury him with dignity. He was a people’s person. He loved people and he was full of life,” Thabo said.

Lubisi arrived in East London on Saturday morning alongside famous South African actor Darlington Michaels aka “Papa G”, to promote their play simply titled Who’s to Blame?

The pair wrote and directed the play, scheduled to take place next month across intermediate schools and high schools in the province.

It tackles the issues of drug abuse by pupils and teenage pregnancy.

When he died, Lubisi was locked in the flat situated on the fourth floor by a friend to apparently sober up.

Police said it was believed that Lubisi had woken up and on realising he could not exit, tried to lower himself from the fourth-storey window using a towel as a rope.

However, he lost his balance and fell to the ground, waking up neighbours who then went out to investigate. No foul play was suspected.

Lubisi died shortly afterwards at Frere Hospital.

Michaels said yesterday Lubisi would be sorely missed.

The two worked at the Melisizwe Community Theatre and had known each other since 1984. Who’s to Blame? will continue as planned in memory of Lubisi, Michaels said yesterday.

“We were supposed to head back to Gauteng on Friday but we will stay behind for a funeral and leave later,” Michaels said.
