Eligible voters registering for the upcoming local government elections this weekend who did not have formal home addresses would not have to produce proof of address, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said yesterday.

Eastern Cape provincial electoral officer Thamsanqa Mraji yesterday said voters who did not have formal addresses, need not despair as the commission had made plans to accommodate them.

Mraji said where voters did not have a formal address they would need to provide sufficient details of where they lived to allow election officials to confirm they were registering in the correct voting district.

According to Mraji, 4678 voting stations in 705 wards in the Eastern Cape will be in operation from this morning and tomorrow between 8am and 5pm for all eligible voters to register, re-register and update their address details.

“Subsequent to the ruling made by the Constitutional Court for the inclusion of a voter’s residence address in the voters’ roll, the IEC has resolved to do everything in its power to encourage all voters to update their details on the voters’ roll, even if they had registered before,” Mraji said.

He was referring to the recent court case which resulted in by-elections in the Tlokwe Municipality being halted because the voters’ roll did not have addresses for all the voters in the area.

He said voters without formal addresses would be required to complete and sign an affirmation form in which they attested to the fact that they lived in the relevant voting district.

Mraji said voters would only need to carry their green barcoded IDs, a smartcard ID or a temporary identification certificate valid for two minths in order to be registered.

lTo check registration status, voters can SMS their ID number to 32810 at R1 per SMS. Those still unsure of which voting station to head to can call the contact centre on 0800-11-8000. Alternatively they can dial *120*432# or using the voting station finder app on www.elections.org.za.
