President Jacob Zuma will in future be paid R7‚876 per day — R239‚568‚42 per month for being president‚ courtesy of the ANC majority in the National Assembly‚ supported by some opposition parties.

It represents an increase of 4.5% on his current salary.

What is more‚ Zuma’s future annual salary of R2‚874‚821 will be backdated to April 1 last year despite the strongly worded opposition of the DA‚ EFF‚ Cope and the ACDP.

The DA‚ Cope and ACDP argued that Zuma receive no increase‚ and the EFF wanted his whole salary to be suspended until the Constitutional Court hands down judgment regarding the improvements to the president’s private home at Nkandla‚ which the taxpayer paid for — meaning that until the judgment‚ Zuma would earn nothing.

But the ANC‚ IFP‚ NFP‚ UDM and Agang argued that Zuma’s proposed increase should be granted‚ pointing out that MPs received the same 4.5% increase on Wednesday‚ similarly backdated to April 1 last year.

They thus called the DA‚ EFF‚ ACDP and Cope hypocritical.

Acting ANC Chief Whip Doris Dlakude said even racist MPs received pay increases‚ yet they denied Zuma the same.

DA chief whip John Steenhuisen said the good work MPs did for all South Africans could not be compared to the way Zuma endangered the country’s economy.

EFF MP Sam Matiase said Zuma had broken his oath of office‚ and ACDP whip Cheryllyn Dudley said in view of the economic situation no increase should be granted to Zuma.

The National Assembly nevertheless approved Zuma’s new salary by 172 votes to 81‚ with 2 MPs abstaining.
