“Racism is evil and hate speech is the manifestation of racism.”

With these words‚ retired Constitutional Court judge Johann van der Westhuizen on Tuesday condemned racism and hate speech as he spoke at a conference to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the South African Human Rights Commission at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

“When speech is not used to communicate but to injure‚ to scare and to intimidate people‚ it does not deserve the protection that free speech deserves‚” Van der Westhuizen said.

Earlier‚ Dr Mathole Motshekga‚ ANC MP and chairman of the parliamentary portfolio committee on justice and correctional services‚ said: “The resurgence of racism shows that we are not anywhere nearer killing the demon of racism.”

He said he did not believe that any amount of campaigning can root out racism.

“We have to rewrite the history of the world to combat racism‚” Motshekga said.

He said the “falsification of human history” was the root cause of racism.
