Guptas and Zuma face charges in two cities

It appeared that the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Thursday had decided against laying corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma’s son.

The party’s had a day earlier vowed to open cases against “Atul Gupta‚ Ajay Gupta‚ Duduzane Zuma and any other persons who were present at the time the offer was made”.

The offer in question is that of the position of finance minister to current deputy Mcebisi Jonas‚ who dropped a bombshell on Wednesday by confirming that the meeting and offer did indeed take place.

Jonas had‚ until then‚ remained silent on the meeting which was first reported on by The Finanical Times in London two weeks ago.

Party leader Mmusi Maimane said on Thursday: “The DA has today laid criminal charges against members of the Gupta family in terms of Section 4 of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act‚ 2004 (Act No 12 of 2004)‚ following revelations this week that members of the African National Congress-aligned Gupta family had offered cabinet positions to at least two ANC members in exchange for executive decisions favourable and beneficial to Guptas’ narrow business interests”.

Duduzane Zuma wasn’t mentioned‚ but Maimane said of his father: “In addition to such charges‚ the DA strongly believes that there should be an investigation into President Jacob Zuma and his involvement in such corrupt and unethical behaviour.”

Also on Thursday‚ the Congress of the People laid charges of corruption against “Mr Zuma…as well as the Guptas” at Pretoria’s Brooklyn Police Station.

As well as the Jonas offer‚ Cope’s Dennis Bloem highlighted as a “classic example of corruption” revelations from former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor on her Facebook page‚ “alleging that she was offered a ministerial position by the Gupta family‚ at the family’s residence in Saxonwold”.

“The position according to the statement was hers if she would as the new minister of public enterprises halted South African Airways from flying to India and making that route available to the Gupta family‚” said Bloem.
