DA targeting poll wins in ‘no-go areas'

The Democratic Alliance in the Buffalo City Metro has launched a campaign to target what the party terms as “no-go areas” including Duncan Village, Orange Grove and Mdantsane.

The party yesterday released its BCM councillor list as it looks to strengthen its grip on the metro.

BCM constituency leader Kevin Mileham said the list had been drawn up to represent a rich diversity, from all walks of life, and to bring a combination of specific skills, youthful energy and local government experience.

Mileham said in the past the DA had experienced intimidation from some parts of Duncan Village, Mdantsane and Orange Grove.

The DA put Bill Gould up for ward 1, Duncan Village, and Vuyokazi Pato in Orange Grove.

Last year DA leader Mmusi Maimane, with other provincial leaders including DA provincial leader Athol Trollip and DA provincial chairwoman Veliswa Mvenya, visited Orange Grove informal settlement to meet with the residents.

The visit was part of the party’s efforts to grow support for this year’s local government elections.

At the time Maimane made it clear the party wanted to grow its support in the Buffalo City Metro after making inroads in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Mileham said branches had been functioning effectively across the metro and that the party had shown consistent growth in BCM.

In the party’s currently held wards, the DA has not changed their candidates, including Beacon Bay ward 28’s Marion Mackley, who has been enjoying positive growth of support.

In 2011, the DA saw its support in ward 28 rise from 54% to 82%, while the ANC’s plunged from 38% to 17.6%, despite the ward being home to senior ANC leaders such as Phumulo Masualle, Noxolo Kiviet and Cecilia Makiwane chief executive Dr Mthandeki Xhamlashe.

“We have no fear in presenting the DA’s vision for a prosperous, fair and free South Africa anywhere in Buffalo City,” said Mileham.
