It was a Family Day like no other for about 50 young patients at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital when an Easter Bunny cheered them up and showered them with gifts during a fun party held for the kids yesterday.

The party was organised by the hospital’s neighbouring Mdantsane City Mall as a way of cheering up children who found themselves admitted to the hospital while their peers enjoyed the Easter holidays with their loved ones at home.

In an effort to cheer up the hospitalised children from ages five years old and above the Billion Group held mini-parties in four different wards.

A life-sized Easter Bunny accompanied by Pick n Pay’s Stikeez mascot brought some smiles and laughter to the children and sealed the fun with party packs and with the donation of a new DVD player to keep the young ones company with movies during their hospital stay.

CMH’s clinic manager for mother and child unit Dr Khungelwa Mrwebi said some of the children who benefited yesterday suffered from burns and medication monitored illnesses while those who were in a critical condition were not part of the programme due to their state.

Mrwebi said: “We encourage this kind of event to take place in our hospital because we know that play is part of treatment. Play is part of therapy and these kinds of events are very important to us because we know that hospitals can be scary for children.”

Mdantsane City’s marketing manager Wendy Zitha said: “Every year, we visit the children’s wards, especially in the holiday periods when families should be together. It’s important because these kids are lying in pain in hospital and not with their loved ones or playing with their friends.”

She added that the Easter hospital visit was just another way to show love and gratitude and to give back to the surrounding community, and its key institutions for supporting the mall.

“Most of our surrounding community members are from poor backgrounds and the children are especially vulnerable. So we start with them because they can’t provide and care for themselves.”
