A frantic week-long search for a human settlements department official last seen on Good Friday, ended tragically for his family when they located his charred remains this weekend.

Thandikhaya “TK” Mantshongane, 31, was burnt beyond recognition after a car crash near Butterworth on March 25.

The family believe he had taken a taxi to Mthatha from East London when the taxi collided with a VW Polo and later caught fire while he was trapped inside.

His family say they positively identified his badly burnt body after finding some of his documents in the taxi wreck exactly a week later.

Last Thursday, TK, who was a human resources practitioner at the department’s O R Tambo regional office, was to take up a new post at their department’s provincial headquarters in East London.

According to his sister Sisonke, Mantshongane – who hails from Ntabankulu – had visited East London on March 24, the day before his death.

He was there to finalise accommodation arrangements in preparation for relocation.

“According to information we received, he did meet up with his landlord and paid the deposit for the place on the morning of March 25. Upon paying Thandikhaya decided to leave his BMW 325i at his soon-tobe new workplace in Chiselhurst and hike to Mthatha.
