Seminar takes informal hairdressing to new level

An empowerment seminar in East London tomorrow aims to help informal hairstylists.

The brainchild of Lwandiswa Ngebe, 29, a sales executive at a local car dealership, the seminar will take place at Legends Showcase Exclusive in Berea tomorrow from 9.30am to 3pm.

“As a regular client at many salons I noticed that there was a gap between salons in the Eastern Cape and others in the country, particularly among the black stylists who are often highly skilled but seemingly struggle to professionalise their skills,” said Ngebe, who has organised the seminar at her own expense.

Various stakeholders have been invited to participate and educate hairstylists on issues such a managing their finances, how they can increase business, where they can access funding, their rights and labour laws.

Among the stakeholders taking part are Matt Hadon, a labour consultant; Victor Msomi, national vice-president of an employers’ organisation for hairdressing, cosmotology and beauty; and Maudelin Mabi, a new business manager at the Eastern Cape rural development and agrarian reform department who will give financial advice to informal hairdressers.
