PE making progress in enabling infrastructure for Operation Phakisa activities

A locally manufactured tug boat‚ a new slipway and boat building and repair facility at Port Elizabeth harbour‚ and an oyster farm in Algoa Bay are some of the things president Jacob Zuma is expected to highlight in his update on Operation Phakisa on Friday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event at the Port Elizabeth harbour on Friday morning‚ Coega Development Corporation’s business development manager Chris Mashigo said government had made significant investment in infrastructure projects to aid Operation Phakisa initiatives.

“There has been a lot of progress is developing enabling infrastructure for key Operation Phakisa activities‚ such as ship building and ship repair‚ so much so that there is evidence of actual products‚” he said in reference to the locally produced Mvezo tug boat.

Mashigo said aquaculture is set to be the buzz word in the province in efforts to boost the ocean economy.

“It has the potential for the massification of employment. And also looking at the vast coastal line at our disposal‚ we need to look at much bigger‚ commercial scale aquaculture‚” he said.

Scores of people‚ mainly African National Congress supporters‚ had filled the marquee at the Port Elizabeth harbour — where Zuma was to speak — singing struggle songs.

Government launched Operation Phakisa two years ago and it is set to push up the country’s GDP by R177-billion and create more than 1-million jobs by 2033.

Operation Phakisa’s four key focus areas are marine transport and manufacturing‚ offshore oil and gas‚ marine protection services and aquaculture‚ all led by the respective government departments. – Tiso Black Star Group Digital/The Herald
