Baleka Mbete 'humbled' by branch decision to name new ward after her

National ANC chair and speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete might be under pressure from opposition benches in Parliament but in her hometown of Mqanduli‚ her stocks just keeps on rising.

Party members of a new municipal ward in the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality have decided to name a new branch after her. Previously the KSD boasted 35 municipal wards.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch after meeting the branch leadership and members during an hour-long closed meeting in Luthubeni Senior Secondary School‚ a stone’s throw away from her home in Gutamana village‚ Mbete said she was humbled by the decision to name the ward after her.

“I am very humbled but at the same time I feel this comes with responsibility‚” she said.

Mzukisi Nyoka‚ the chair of the ANC in the new ward‚ said three names had been proposed during the branch’s annual general meeting in November last year where the new branch leadership was also elected.

“When naming a branch you look at the history of credentials and Comrade Mbete’s leadership credentials superseded those two other names.
