4 arrested after gun battle

A Port Alfred policeman had a narrow escape this morning during a gun battle with four men suspected of plotting an attack on an elderly couple on a farm outside town.

One of the suspects was shot in the shoulder when police tried to stop the blue Toyota Corolla shortly after it left the farm.

The bonnet of a police vehicle was struck by a bullet allegedly fired from the car during the shootout. Several bullet holes were visible in the rear windows of the Corolla.

All four suspects were arrested shortly after the dawn gun battle.

Local farm security specialist Dudley Waters said at scene that the attack was thwarted after they received a tip off the gang was planning to rob couple and waited at the house.

The men fled without entering the house and the shootout ensued as they drove towards town.

Attempts to get comment this morning from police spokesman Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula proved fruitless.
