Zuma ‘grateful for the gift of life’ as he turns 74

President Jacob Zuma’s wish for his 74th birthday wasn’t cheerful.

He wished that the country could “continue working together to address our common challenges‚ particularly in this difficult economic climate of joblessness; rising fuel and food prices and high levels of poverty and equality”.

“It is only through our unity as South Africans that we will be able to overcome the current challenges and build a prosperous South Africa‚” Zuma said‚ according to a statement on Tuesday.

Zuma’s call for unity came just hours after the Economic Freedom Fighters issued a statement saying the recent Constitutional Court ruling “should unite all of us regardless of political affiliation”.

The party said it celebrated the “overwhelming positive response…to the Nkandla judgment and the call for Zuma to step down”.

The Presidency statement said Zuma “will spend this special day with family”.

“I am grateful for the gift of life and to celebrate this special day in my life. My birthday wish is to see South Africa increasingly becoming a better place for all‚” it quoted Zuma as saying.
