DA admits to erecting controversial Jordaan poster in PE

The Democratic Alliance has taken responsibility for a “mystery billboard” erected on the side of a building in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday‚ saying it was considering legal action after it was removed.

The billboard‚ in ANC colours and with the wording “Danny Jordaan proudly brought to you by Jacob Zuma”‚ was displayed across the top part of a doctor’s surgery in Hiles Road‚ at the intersection with Kempston Road – slap-bang between two buildings bearing DA advertising.

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Danny Jordaan’s chief of staff‚ Mlungisi Ncame‚ said on Wednesday his boss had asked officials to remove it.

“Danny Jordaan has directed our billboard in NMB be removed. We are considering legal action‚” the DA tweeted on Thursday morning.

DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip on Wednesday claimed not to know who had erected the billboard. But a statement from Trollip’s campaign manager‚ Andrew Whitfield‚ on Thursday seemed to contradict his boss as he referred to it numerous times as a “DA billboard”.

“Danny Jordaan has this morning personally and in writing instructed the removal of the DA billboard‚ showing him to be the personal protector of Jacob Zuma‚” Whitfield said.

“Jordaan has given no reasons for his executive instruction to remove the billboard‚ and has simply autocratically instructed its removal.

“The DA is consulting our lawyers with a view to take legal action against Jordaan and the NMB municipality.”

Whitfield borrowed from DA leader Mmusi Maimane’s criticism of Zuma during the 2015 state of the nation address debate‚ saying Jordaan’s action “shows he is a broken mayor‚ protecting a broken president”.
