RAF help for ANC crash families as Zuma expresses shock

The Road Accident Fund will assist families of the 11 African National Congress members who were killed in a bus crash on Sunday morning‚ with funeral arrangements and processing claims.

The accident happened when a bus ferrying ANC volunteers from Ekurhuleni rolled several times on the N1 between Winburg and Kroonstad. At least 59 people were injured.

President Jacob Zuma on Monday extended his condolences to the families of the bus crash and other road accidents.

“We are still in deep shock. This is a loss not for the ANC only but the country as a whole.

“We are with all the families that have lost their loved ones tragically and in this most painful manner. We urge the nation to keep the families in their thoughts and prayers‚” said President Zuma.

The RAF‚ in a statement issued on Monday‚ said it had contacted the police and hospitals to process compensation and offer support to the deceased’s families.

“The RAF Johannesburg regional team will meet with family members of the deceased to activate funeral support as provided for in the RAF Act. Consultations will continue with the bereaved families after the funerals to originate claims for loss of support for the surviving dependents‚ and qualifying heads of damages for the injured‚” RAF chief executive Eugene Watson said in the statement.

Watson said families of the deceased and those severely injured could contact RAF directly to determine what benefits they were eligible for.

“Among the health facilities where patients have been admitted‚ we have service centres at Bongani and Boitumelo Hospitals in Welkom and Kroonstad respectively where direct assistance can be provided.

“Alternatively‚ we urge people to contact our Call Centre on 0860 23 55 23 to establish the closest office they can go to start the claims process‚” said Watson.
