EFF condemns ‘brutal’ police response to Rhodes student protests

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party has condemned what it called the “brutal’ police response to the ongoing student protests against rape attacks on the campus of Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

Several protesting students were arrested during running skirmishes with police on Wednesday.

Students barricaded roads between the university and the city overnight and on Wednesday morning.

Police fired stun grenades into some of the barricades to make students move back.

In a statement‚ the EFF accused police of attacking “non-violent and unarmed students with rubber bullets and teargas”.

“We call on the police to restrain themselves and also release the arrested students with immediate effect‚” the party said.

It said the students were raising a legitimate concern about “the failures of our society‚ in particular the very police‚ university management and the entire justice system in dealing with rape and rape culture”.
