Woman raped in bushes and robbed after surviving crash

A car crash on the Mdantsane Access Road ended in horror for a 36-year-old woman who was robbed, dragged from the accident scene and raped in the nearby bushes.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning not far from traffic lights leading into Duncan Village.

The woman, who cannot be named due to the nature of the crime, is believed to have been travelling alone at the time.

After losing control of her vehicle she crashed into the barrier. The cause of the accident is unknown.

According to Tana it was when she stepped out of her vehicle that she was approached by two men.

“It was then that the victim was approached by the two suspects who dragged her into the bushes and raped her,” Tana said.

“The victim was also robbed of her possessions including a cellphone and a handbag which had R300 inside.

“Her car keys were also reported missing, although it’s not clear if the keys were taken from her or if they were lost while they were dragging her into the bushy area.”

Tana said the woman was found by paramedics responding to the accident scene.

She was first attended to medically before paramedics took her to Duncan Village Police Station where a case of rape and robbery was opened.

Tana urged all motorists to remain vigilant when travelling alone.

“People are urged to exercise caution when travelling alone on dark and lonely roads, especially female drivers, if travelling alone.

“If someone does get into an accident, they are urged to first phone a friend and ask for assistance before stepping out of their vehicles,” he said.
