Winnie Madikizela-Mandela discharged from hospital‚ recovering at home

Politician Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is recovering at home after undergoing back surgery.

Madikizela-Mandela‚ Madiba’s ex-wife‚ was rushed to a Johannesburg hospital earlier this month after falling ill and requiring surgery for what the Nelson Mandela Foundation described as “spinal stenosis”.

Her first surgery‚ for compression of the spinal nerve and pain relief‚ took place on 8 March. It was followed by a second procedure on 14 April to assist with her recovery‚ the foundation said.

Neeran Naidoo‚ Director of Communications of the Nelson Mandela Foundation‚ said in a statement late yesterday that she had been discharged on Tuesday.

“She is recuperating from back surgery at her home after her discharge‚” he said.

As a result‚ she was unable to personally receive the Order of Luthuli‚ awarded to her by President Jacob Zuma.

She was represented at the Pretoria ceremony on Thursday by her granddaughter‚ Zoleka.

The foundation sent its “hearty congratulations” to Madikizela-Mandela.

“Mrs Madikizela-Mandela dedicated her life to the liberation struggle in South Africa and suffered greatly for it‚” said Sello Hatang‚ Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He congratulated her on behalf of Professor Njabulo Ndebele‚ the Chairperson of the NMF‚ its Trustees and Staff.

Hatang added his congratulations to Mac Maharaj who was also honoured among South African anti-apartheid activists‚ scientists and artists.

“It is important that we also acknowledge those from other countries who were given National Orders for their anti-apartheid work‚” Hatang said‚ “We urge them to continue their assistance as our young country navigates its struggles ahead.”
