The Rockets set to woo Mthatha

After touring in East London, Queenstown and Port Elizabeth, popular R&B/pop group The Rockets will perform live at the OR Tambo Hall in Mthatha later this month.

Proceeds from the event will go towards Round Table Mthatha’s fundraising efforts.

Led by Jerry Watt, The Rockets have been around for more than 20 years performing at prestigious music events across the country including The Jazzathon, The Richtersveld Celebrations, The Staying Alive Aids Concert filmed by MTV, and recently in the KKNK festival in Oudtshoorn.

The band has two SA Music Awards under their belts in the best pop performance and best contemporary dance performance categories.

Other band members include Jano van der Berg on bass guitar, Theo Watt on vocals, Devanish Hendricks on keyboard and vocals and Bruce Newman on drums.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Watt said they performed wherever they get booked but said that a performance in Mthatha was “long overdue”.

Watt said that the audience could look forward to hearing some of the group’s previous work as well as music from their 26th album, Sizzling Summer Mixes, which was launched in East London last year.

“We have been around for a long time, so you can imagine that most of our material is very old school; but we have to consider our audiences as well because we have a wide variety of fans who range from very young to very old.

“We always have to mix in some of the new music to keep everyone entertained,” said Watt.

The Cape Town-based group’s performance is being hosted by H & K Entertainment, founded by Gerard Knock and Wain Hawkes who want to use the event to provide entertainment for local residents.

lThe show will be held on May 28 at the OR Tambo Hall. Tickets are R200. For info contact 082-670-8383/082-468-7594. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
