New twist in Mthatha murdered couple case

The murder case of Mthatha couple Carl George and Jacqueline Miller took a different twist at the Mthatha High Court today when one of the suspects claimed he had been tortured before pointing out where they had dumped the couple's bodies.

This resulted in a trial within a trial as the state wanted to ascertain the facts.

Accused number three, Andiphile Mhlophe, 21, claimed he had been covered with a refuse bag sprayed with pepper spray before he was allegedly threatened with further torture at the Central Police Station if he refused to point out the scene of the crime.

However, investigating officer Captain Zwelandile Kilili, constable Sobabini Mcazulwa and local criminal record centre’s constable Kenneth Miniyakhe Moni, who all went to the scene of the crime with the accused denied his tortute allegations when they testified.

Family members of Mhlophe, his co-accused Bongani Dephana, 22, and Mkhululi Luwaca, 22, sat on the one side of the court while their alleged victims' families sat on the other.
