Police are investigating a case of murder after a popular Eastern Cape businesswoman and former mayor was found dead in her house on Wednesday night.
Shirley Bosman, 59, of Amatolaview in Stutterheim was alone at her house at the time. It is alleged that suspects gained entry through a back bathroom window and attacked her.
King William's Town police spokeswoman, Siphokazi Mawisa, confirmed that a case of murder has been opened.
Bosman, a former Stutterheim Transitional Local Council deputy mayor was running a shop that was supporting the small community of Amatolaview.
The family, through a spokesman, Toney Plaatjies, said Bosman, also a former teacher, was found on the floor of her room.
“When people gained entry into the house found her on the floor with a cloth on her face. We suspect that she was suffocated to death but the postmortem will reveal the cause of death,” said Plaatjies.
He said Bosman was well-known in the community of Stutterheim for the role she played in the community.
“We really can't describe how these heartless criminals have done. She was alone at the time, I received a call and I had to rush here,” said Plaatjies.
Her lifeless body was found by neighbours who were concern after she failed to open up her shop on Wednesday morning.
