The Communication Workers Union (CWU) wants the African National Congress to back its demand that the South African Post Office is offered a bailout‚ as were South African Airways and Eskom.
About 150 members of the union gathered at Mary Fitzgerald Square on Friday‚ ahead of a march on the ANC headquarters in Johannesburg in protest against the lack of response from the ANC over the bailout and wage increase demands.
General secretary Aubrey Tshabalala lambasted the ruling party for it arrogance for not even replying to the memorandum handed to ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe last month.
“Mantashe‚ you ignored us but when AfriForum marches you jump. But when we‚ who vote for the ANC … when we raise out voice‚ Mantashe‚ you ignore us‚” Tshabalala said.
He said the union wanted put pressure on those the ANC had deployed to government‚ specifically the minister of communications and the treasury‚ to approve the bailout.
The Post Office workers’ primary concern is that they had not received an increase in the past two years. They are demanding an agreement they would get a 10% increase this year and an agreement the post office would get a bailout.
The post office’s workforce was cut from 23 000 to just over 12 500.
One the marchers‚ Tohepang Lesba‚ said that in the past two year a number senior managers were given golden handshakes but when it came to bailing out the Post Office the government dragged it feet.
Tshabalala said the Post Office “has to move with the times — things like a free wi-fi service — but it needed the support of government and for it to give the Post Office its business.
The state-owned entity needs R2.7-billion to save itself from bankruptcy.
