A tattoo, glass shoe just perfect gifts for moms

A tattoo, a miniature glass shoe and a deadline-free day – these are the gifts mothers really want for Mother’s Day tomorrow.

Frere CEO and philanthropist Dr Rolene Wagner has a very well-defined wish list for her twin daughters Laura and Emma, 17, and 10-year-old son Philip.

Having already enjoyed a massage as a “warm-up”, Wagner yearns for a Mother’s Day filled with “absolute relaxation, free of mommy duties”.

The dynamic doctor would like to sleep in late, which in her busy life translates to after 5am. She would also like to soak in a deep bubble bath, before being treated to a breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs and toast on her Stirling patio.

“Then I would like to spend the morning under the blankies watching action movies and sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows.”

Following a light roast chicken and veggie lunch, couch time would include a session with the Sunday Times and a nap.

“Of course all of this would be without me having to play mommy taxi. Just peace and relaxation – a deadline-free day.”

Lawyer, author and serial adventurer Kim van Kets has a characteristically quirky take on “dropping hints” about Mother’s Day gifts.

“I’ve been toying with the idea of having a tattoo for a long time, but I could never think of something I’d like to have for infinity and then I thought it might be quite nice to have text and I thought of the word ‘grace’ which is obviously a very significant word.

“It’s also the second name of my daughter Hannah, and Hannah also means grace,” said Van Kets, who would also not say no to an entry to a new 100 mile race in the Cederberg.

“I would love to do it but I can’t justify the expense of the entry,” said the Sunrise-on-Sea resident who once ran, cycled and kayaked around the entire periphery of South Africa.

For Sushila Pillay, who has three sons and five grandsons and is known for her Indian cooking, bunches of yellow roses would be the perfect gift to complement her ultra-feminine decor.

“I love flowers and my house is like a doll-house, with dolls, fairies, trinkets and my miniature glass shoe collection, so I would also love another little glass shoe.”

New mother Zizo Beda, who attended Clarendon High School in East London before being crowned Miss South Africa Teen and becoming a household name for her work in television, said she would love to see her mother, Nonceda Beda, who lives in Butterworth, tomorrow.

“She is just the coolest and it would be special to spend my first Mother’s Day with her.

“Unfortunately this won’t be the case because of commitments, but I’m sure I will have a great day with my boys,” said Beda, who wed home affairs spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete last year and gave birth to their son in March. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
