CISCO to introduce free online course to help address unemployment in SA

CISCO systems‚ a US multinational technology company‚ is set to introduce a free online course‚ focusing specifically on the “Internet of Everything”‚ which it hopes will help address the unemployment crisis in SA.

The course is aimed at equipping students with specific ICT skills that will be in increasing demand in Africa in the near future.

The company said this week in order to address the unemployment problem‚ SA will need to rethink its centres of economic growth – which has traditionally been the mining‚ manufacturing and trade sector.

According to Alfie Hamid‚ regional manager for corporate affairs at Cisco systems‚ the company set about to introduce the online course‚ focusing specifically on the Internet of Everything which aims to upskill the South African ICT workforce “resulting in respectable expert masters in networking”.

“In a world driven by technology‚ adaption is key and redefining the job market is an imperative‚” said Mr Hamid.

He said Cisco predicts that by 2020‚ 50 billion things will be connected to the web‚ which will generate nearly $2bn in total economic value by the same year and result in job creation. However‚ as the internet of everything connects people‚ processes and things in unprecedented ways‚ so the need to address the ICT skills deficit intensifies.

Meanwhile InnoTech‚ the incubator programme for ICT start-ups in Telkom’s Cape Town FutureHub‚ announced on Wednesday that applications are now open for the 2016 Telkom FutureMakers InnoTech intake‚ starting in June. The programme targets coders and developers who are developing a B2B solution of any type‚ an e-commerce platform‚ gaming and media with the aim of taking them from “concept to market”.

“This programme is geared towards entrepreneurially minded developers and tech savvy entrepreneurs. What they will find is in-depth business support that will help them reach product viability‚ backed with a sound business skill-set that will keep them successful after launch. We also provide these entrepreneurs with the infrastructure and connectivity they need to support them while they develop their idea into a market-ready product‚” said Michelle Matthews‚ innovation programme manager at the Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative.
