Panayiotou’s bail hearing postponed till Friday

Murder accused Christopher Panayiotou again appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday as his bid for bail continued.

State prosecutor‚ Marius Stander requested that the matter stand down until Friday owing to the fact that certain evidence was not placed before court by the defence on Tuesday.

Proceedings were then remanded until 10am on Friday by Magistrate Abigail Beeton.

When it was stated that proceedings would be postponed‚ reaction from the gallery prompted Beeton to reprimand those in attendance stating that any actions that are indicative of contempt will be seriously dealt with.

Panayiotou‚ 30‚ the alleged mastermind behind the murder of his wife‚ Uitenhage school teacher Jayde Panayiotou‚ 29‚ in April last year‚ is trying for a third time to be released on bail‚ this time based on new facts.

The inadmissibility of the testimony of the state’s prime witness‚ underhanded tactics from the police and the prosecution misleading the court were only some of the accusations made by Panayiotou’s legal team on Tuesday.

Both families of Panayiotou and Jayde were present‚ as well as the employees of Panayiotou wearing t-shirts with the word “innocent” printed on the back‚ in the court room 29 public gallery.

A comic strip relating to the case thus far‚ and signed “Oom Danie” at the bottom of each page‚ did its rounds on Thursday morning.
