Fort Hare students thwarted from storming celebration venue

The University of Fort Hare’s centenary celebrations on Friday morning got off to a dramatic start when students and police faced off.

About 100 students gathered and went from residence to residence‚ convincing their peers to join them.

The group was eventually stopped by police as they approached the Sports Complex‚ the venue for the jubilee event.

Police used water cannons to disperse the crowd that was charging forward towards the venue.

About 30 minutes later‚ more than 300 students gathered and blocked the university’s main entrance.

Police‚ however‚ did not disperse them‚ and they continued singing struggle songs.

Police have now cordoned off the entrance area‚ which has been vulnerable to vandalism.

As the drama ensued‚ an SAPS helicopter kept hovering over the Fort Hare precinct.
