(WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGE) Student in hospital after Fort Hare shooting

A University of Fort Hare student is in hospital with a broken jaw and dislocated teeth after he was allegedly shot by police at the institution’s Alice campus this week.

The post-graduate student was shot in the face at close-range by what is believed to be a rubber bullet fired by police in wake of violent demonstrations this week.

The musician and anthropology honours student, Phumelele “Pura” Lavisa, sustained the wound to his chin, resulting in a broken jaw.

He alleges police shot at him while he was standing outside a student residence on Thursday evening.
