Big dreams for ‘Voice’ finalist

Eastern Cape-born singing talent Thembeka Mnguni has given her all in The Voice SA competition, and it is now up to the nation to decide if she’s worthy of the title.

Mnguni, who is in Karen Zoid’s team, stands to win a sought-after contract from Universal Music and more than R800000 in prizes tomorrow at the finale, to be held at the Sasani Studios in Johannesburg.

Speaking to the Saturday Dispatch yesterday, the 33-year-old said she has given her performances her “all”.

“I poured out my heart in every performance. Whatever happens now, I know that I will be something in the music industry,” she said.

Attending her first audition for the show, the

Bizana-born singer said she had never expected to get anywhere in the competition.

“After being rejected so many times on Idols SA and X-Factor SA, I never thought that I could sing in front of a massive crowd. I was made to believe that I can not sing.”

Although her personal insecurities prevented her from dreaming big, Mnguni said she had hoped to be in the top 16.

“Because of my own insecurities as a big woman, I blamed everything on my weight. I didn’t think I could get so far in the competition but now I know I can achieve anything,” she said.

Mnguni said she hoped other plus-sized women would believe in themselves and not allow insecurities to limit them.

She added she wanted to win for her five-year-old autistic son, Sabelo.

“I am definitely doing this for my little guy’s life to be easy. I want to be able to drive him to school and also afford his very expensive education for his autism to be controlled better. He is such a blessing in my life,” Mnguni said.

Last week, The Voice SA team gave the talent a taste of what it was like to record their own tracks and have their music made available for public release by Universal Music South Africa.

They released an album with the top 13 contestants’ singles on Sunday last week. In less than two days, both the album and singles were dominating the iTunes charts.

There will be a second album made available after the finale next week, which will feature tracks from the Top 8 finalists. All of these tracks will be available on iTunes, Apple Music or on Google Play.

The season finale taking place tomorrow night will be simulcast on both M-Net (Channel 101) and sister channel M-Net City (Channel 115) at 5pm. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
