Chance for EC musicians to shine on world stage

Five upcoming musicians from the Eastern Cape are off to Europe next week to attend the Primavera Music Festival.

Musicians Anam Manyati, Ludwe Mgolombane, Ian Brand, Ziphozakhe Macuba and East London group Can of Worms jet off to Spain next week Monday.

Their trip was made possible by a partnership between the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre and the Independent Music Exporters of South Africa (Imexsa).

The Eastern Cape artists make up the majority of singers/groups from South Africa who will be attending the festival, which starts on June 1.

A Johnannesburg-based singer is the sixth member of the delegation.

Late last year Imexsa and the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC) held auditions in Port Elizabeth, East London and Mthatha for talent to take to the world.

The winners also received vouchers to record at ECAVC Records.

ECAVC director Sy Ntuli said it was every artists’ dream to perform in Europe and the United States.

“But it is not every artist that gets to realise that dream. ECAVC is proud to have partnered with Imexsa to make the dream come true for these young and relatively unknown Eastern Cape artists,” he said, adding that ECAVC will continue with their partnership with Imexsa.

“We hope to assist more talented Eastern Cape artists to tour and export their music overseas through this partnership.”

Port Elizabeth-based Manyati said she could not wait to perform in Spain.

“I’ve performed around the country but it’s the first time that I will be performing on an international stage. This is amazing and I know all the guys going are looking forward to the experience,” she said.

Imexsa and ECAVC have paid for the flights, accommodation and festival fees.

“All we have to pay for as artists is our daily expenses. We’ve all been working extra hard to raise funds for that,” Manyati said.

This Saturday the ECAVC is hosting a mini send-off concert in Port Elizabeth to help the musicians raise funds.

While in Europe, Ntuli is scheduled to attend the world’s largest music market, Midem Music Conference, to market and promote music from the province.

“The Eastern Cape is the home of legends. These young artists are walking on the foot steps of their forefathers.

“Our artists are dominating the national music charts, the likes of Nathi, Mobi Dixon, Black Coffee, Emtee, Msaki to name just a few.

“We may be short of diamond and gold mines in the Eastern Cape, but we have an abundance of music talent in our province,” Ntuli said.

The Eastern Cape music ambassadors will return on June 9 and are scheduled to go to New York later in the year. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
