Executors to consult family on public access to Madiba’s resting place

Executors of the estate of late former president Nelson Mandela announced that they still needed to consult the family of the anti-apartheid icon with a view to setting up public access to his resting place.

Mandela‚ the first president of the democratic SA‚ passed away in December 2013 in Johannesburg.

Mandela’s will was announced last year and executors on Friday made a public announcement of all the cash bequests made in terms of Mandela’s will.

The executors announced that they left out Madiba’s home at Qunu in the Eastern Cape from the liquidation and distribution account.

They will only include it once the dispute between the executors and Mandela’s second wife Winnie Madikizela has been resolved.

On the issue of public access to Mandela’s grave‚ one of the executors‚ retired deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke‚ said: “Our duty remains to consult with the family and to set up structures that will be responsible for public access to the resting place of Mandela. That will involve the state.”

Moseneke said a shrine was something the executors were considering setting up.

“At the moment we have been maintaining the gravesite.”

Moseneke said he hoped that there would be progress on this goal by July.
