Villagers to learn about animal care

More than 400 Ntabankulu villagers are to be trained in animal health skills.

The programme, launched on Thursday, will see another 200 villagers equipped with entrepreneurial skills.

Funded by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (Hwseta) the R2.4-million programme is a welcome development as it will create desperately needed jobs for residents in the Alfred Nzo region, which has high unemployment figures.

The 400 participants were chosen from the four municipalities that make up the district. Councillors and traditional leaders distributed application forms after an advert calling for applicants appeared.

The initiative is a partnership between Hwseta and the Alfred Nzo Development Agency (Anda).

Hwseta is responsible for education, training and skills development of the health, social development and veterinary sectors.

Hwseta chief executive officer Yvonne Mbane said the funding would be far-reaching as the skills and knowledge gained would benefit greater Ntabankulu and improve animal healthcare.

Alfred Nzo Development agency’s CEO Chief Madzikane II Thandisizwe Diko said the programme would go a long way in decreasing unemployment.

He said more than 18% of the region’s population was illiterate, which added to the high unemployment figures of more than 29000 residents.

Through the Hwseta and Anda partnership, a dent would be made in the unemployment figures, Diko added.

The participants would also be trained to comply with the standards of caring for animals that would be slaughtered.

Diko said with proper support and training, villagers could also own veterinary clinics. — ndamasem@dispatch.co.za
