Border looking to put bite back into their play against the SWD

For the first time in eight weeks the Border Bulldogs will not be in action over the weekend as they recharge their batteries after a gruelling start to the Currie Cup qualifiers.

The team has played eight games in a row and the break could not have come at a better time, after they broke a four-match losing streak last weekend.

This gives them some much-needed confidence and a platform from which to strike, when they return to action next weekend.

Despite not playing this weekend, the team has still had a busy week and will get the next few days off before getting back into it on Monday.

“We had a number of field and gym sessions on Monday and Tuesday and also got in a video session for a bit of analysis,” Border captain Siya Mdaka said.

“We can't just put our feet up because we aren't playing, we need to keep our foot on the pedal and be ready for next weekend.

“But it was nice to have a team-building session yesterday at Nahoon beach where we played games and had a braai, which was good for the team, and now we will have a few days off just to recharge the batteries before getting back to training on Monday.”

The Bulldogs win over the Valke this past weekend was their fourth of the season, but was important in that it snapped their four-match losing streak after winning their opening three matches.

The result leaves them in ninth place on the 15-team table, and within striking distance of the four teams ahead of them.

However, this could change after this weekend’s rugby as those four sides, namely the Lions, Leopards, Free State and Griffons are all in action.

“From here we just need to take it one game at a time and then see where we are in a few weeks,” said Mdaka.

Border’s next match is against South Western Districts at Outeniqua Park in George and with the latter sitting a place below the Bulldogs, it will be an important match for both sides as they will want climb up the table and not slip towards the bottom. “We will be back in full training mode on Monday to get ready for SWD,” said Mdaka.

“It will be important to take the momentum from the Valke match into that game and hopefully get another win to continue building our confidence.”

The match will take place next week Friday night at 7pm.
