Duels of epic proportions on centre-stage

Cracking Super League action is on the cards this weekend with some massive games set to shake up the Border club league.

A titanic clash will see two of the tournament hopefuls go head-to-head tomorrow when second on the log Police host third-placed Walter Sisulu University (WSU) All Blacks in what should be an exciting match at Police Park.

“It is a massive battle. I think it is going to be a very forward dominated battle and is going to be a very tough game,” said Police coach Alistair Alexander. “Both teams are in form and I think it is going to be an exciting match.”

Both teams head into the match unbeaten after solid starts to the season and both are locked on 26 points, with Police ahead on points difference.

Police have won five and drawn one of their six games so far, while WSU have enjoyed six straight wins, but Police, having picked up four bonus points against the All Blacks’ two, means they are able to be level with them despite the draw.

“Things are going to plan for us so far. We have played well this season and are on a good run of wins,” said WSU coach Sipho Metula.

Police bounced back well from their draw two weeks ago against Swallows to comfortably beat Winter Rose 39-14 this past weekend, and they will take that momentum into the coming clash.

“I said to the players this was a very good buildup to this weekend’s game. They played to structure and if they can stick to structure against WSU we are confident of doing well,” said Alexander.

WSU will, however, themselves be on a high having thumped Africans two weeks ago, showing their attacking side and then proving they can grind out a result when needed with a good 13-5 win over Cambridge the past weekend.

“This is a big match. It is going to be a tough battle but I think we have a great chance of turning things around from previous seasons where we haven’t done as well,” said Metula.

It will thus be a massive coming together of two in-form teams, and should be a great spectacle to watch.

“I think that the team who makes the least mistakes will win the match,” said Alexander.

“This is a must-win match because I think that the winner of this game will have a mini decider against Old Boys, which could decide the league title.”

Old Selbornians themselves currently have the outright lead on the log for the first time, one point ahead, and they will look to secure that place with a bonus point win over Africans.

Africans have conceded over 50 points in their last two games against WSU and Swallows, and Old Boys should be confident of claiming a bonus point win as they have upped their game in the last few weeks.

Their last outing was a confident 38-14 win against Berlin Tigers away, and returning back to Mike Pendock Motors Park they should stamp their authority in front of their home fans.

A couple of interesting mid-table clashes will also be on show this weekend, meaning some teams will lose further ground on the frontrunners, while others will be looking to break from the middle.

Fourth-placed Swallows take on sixth placed Ocean Sweepers while fifth placed Fort Hare Blues entertain eighth-placed Winter Rose.

Swallows have had a decent season so far with just one loss in five games, and will be confident of beating Ocean Sweepers in Mdantsane despite the good recent form from Sweepers that has seen them move up the log.

The Blues will also be confident taking on Winter Rose in Alice, especially after they come off a good win over Buffs, while Winter Rose have suffered two big losses in a row.

Other matches on this weekend see the bottom four sides against each other as third from bottom Buffs host second from bottom Breakers and fourth from bottom Cambridge welcome bottom side Tigers.

All matches kick-off at 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon.
