Top firm gifts schools pallets of stationary

More than half a million rands worth of stationary is to be distributed to 16 primary and 16 high schools in the Buffalo City Metro area by the Kempston Group.

The family-owned company, which boasts a net worth of about R1-billion and comprises more than 100 commercial and industrial sites across the country, bought about R700000 worth of stationary at the auction of Just On Cosmetics, of which Tony Cotterell, Kempston Group owner, is also a trustee.

Yesterday Kempston Group launched a campaign, “Rescue Our Youth” which saw three schools – uThixo uLungile Ministries, Greensleeves and African Angels – each receive a pallet of stationary and toys.

Lou Billet from African Angels said they were thrilled with the generous donation.

Greensleeves founder Dianne Lehy, who has just started a school this year, said they now had enough books to last three years and had a year’s worth of stationary.

“We have about 26 children from Grades 0 to 7 and they were so excited when a bakkie delivered all the stationary and toys. We are so grateful.”

The remaining 32 pallets, and a further 12 pallets of new toys, will be donated to other needy schools, drawn from a number of names nominated by the public.

Pallets have been compiled for both high and primary schools, each featuring a variety of books, pencils, pens, crayons, calculators, pastels, mathematics sets and more.

Kempston Group CEO Tony Cotterell said he believed youth were the future and should not have their dreams put on hold.

“If they cannot dream, and dream big, due to lack of means, what will enable these children to turn their dreams into a reality? And then what future do they – or we – have?

“If we are able to give a child who dreams of being an artist a set of pastels, then we have fulfilled one dream.

“Imagine if everyone could step up and help rescue the dreams of our youth,” he said.

Marketing manager Vanessa Walters urged schools to contact Kempston and provide their credentials to qualify for a stationary pallet worth R25000.

“Kempston has always been passionate about giving to the community and has helped communities all over South Africa, but the company does have a larger footprint in East London.

“We are specifically passionate about those who cannot help themselves – children, the elderly and animals,” she said.

The Kempston Group urged the public to nominate and recommend deserving schools that may be selected to benefit from the donation.
