Fires start up again around Grahamstown

Fires around Grahamstown have flared up again on the back of a strong berg wind.

But Makana Municipality’s disaster manager Khuselo Qupe said at 11am that no households or stock were in imminent danger and the fire department had staff near all the flareup points.

“All the fires currently burning are far from houses. They are in inaccessible areas in the mountains and valleys and we can’t reach these areas. Everyone is on high alert and the situation is being closely monitored.”

A fire roaring in the hills above the Stone Crescent hotel some 8km outside Grahamstown was causing dense smoke over the N2 and he asked drivers to proceed with caution in areas where visibility had been affected.

“Traffic officials are there keeping an eye on the situation.”

The berg wind heralds an intense cold front which is predicted to reach Grahamstown by tomorrow afternoon. If the expected accompanying rain arrives, it is likely to put the brakes on the fires which have been raging since Tuesday night.
