The “King of the Keyboard” Ian von Memerty will open his latest production, Keyboard Killers, in East London tomorrow.

The well-known entertainer, who is already in the city in preparation for the Guild Theatre show, said it was inspired by some of the greatest musicians across the globe.

“I am awestruck by talent. It is like a glimpse of the supernatural, no one knows why it occurs or where it will grow.

“I had to be specific when I was looking at these musicians, some play the piano well, they have had a long career, were able to write great lyrics and four among them are also great singers. I took an octave of the best,” he said.

The show will see Von Memerty play music by Freddie Mercury, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Billy Joel and Fats Waller.

“This is about examining the magic of talent and what it leaves behind. The first song that I open the show with is 101 years old and the last one is one-year-old,” he said, adding that the musicians have had a great influence in the music industry and their hits continue to live on.

“The show is about my worship of talent. When you are putting a show together you want something that will entertain people and transport them, make them laugh and recognise the music,” he said.

Von Memerty said he was excited about the production.

“The sound is rich. This is not a one-man piano show, we have someone on percussion and bass. People are going to love it,” he said.

The former SA’s Got Talent judge’s last visit to the city was in January when he partnered with Centrestage for the Elton John tribute show.

Keyboard Killers runs from tomorrow to Saturday night starting from 7.30pm. Tickets cost R150 and are available from Computicket and the Guild Theatre.
