Bok coach goes walkabout with Grahamstown fans

By DAVID MACGREGOR

Springbok rugby coach Allister Coetzee arrived in Grahamstown this morning to a hero's welcome.

About 50 supporters, including childhood friends, people he played rugby with growing up in Grahamstown and fans, walked down High Street with him to the city hall to meet the mayor and other dignitaries.

Organisers say the purpose of the visit is to honour his achievements.

He will tour the community and meet with fans.

Mayor Nomhle Gaga welcomed him home, saying  he was a son of the area. Worked for non-racial sport and was an inspiration to all.

The entourage will go to Dakawa art centre to see an exhibition on history of black rugby in the  area.

Coetzee said it was a great honour to be home and recognised like this.

Friend, Rufus Poswa, who lived with Coetzee's family as a schoolboy said he was there to support him.

"I am a proud supporter of Bok rugby. Being coach is a huge achievement. "

Coetrzee said he was doing well.  It was long overdue to be appointed the Bok coach. He has done pretty well and is transforming the team.
