Four escapees back behind bars

Four juvenile prisoners who escaped from the Cambridge based John X Merriman detention centre in Cambridge have been rearrested.

The centre is operated by the Eastern Cape social development department.

Police said the four youths who are serving time for various crimes were rearrested in Stutterheim on Wednesday.

They are Vuma Jeholo, Vincent Kort, Achumile Gube and Patrick Bomeni.

It emerged yesterday that they escaped from the centre by jumping over a barbed wire fence while playing soccer at lunchtime.

The incident occurred on Tuesday. They were only discovered missing during a head count by guards in the centre.

It is still unclear where the guards were when the youths escaped.

A case of escaping from custody was opened at the Cambridge police station.

The boys were found at the Stutterheim home of Bomeni. They were fetched by social development official and brought back to the detention centre.
